Common Alert Protocol

Increase situational awareness and response accuracy in a worst case scenario by integrating your digital signage system with CAP.

What is CAP?

(Common Alert Protocol)

The Common Alerting Protocol (CAP), is a safety and security format standard allowing for consistent alert messages to be disseminated simultaneously over multiple communications pathways. A single emergency alert can trigger a variety of public warning systems, increasing the likelihood that people receive the alert by one or more communication pathways.

Carousel can receive CAP messages from external systems on the network via an HTTP post. If another system, like an emergency alert system, sends Carousel a message you can automatically trigger alerts and other content. The content is triggered by bulletin tag so you can build complex trigger actions with ease. Carousel is ready in an emergency to receive CAP triggers to quickly display targeted visual notifications and instructions throughout your signage network with no user action required.

The Common Alerting Protocol can:

  • Add rich alert media such as photographs, maps, streaming video and audio.
  • Geographically target emergency alerts to a defined warning area. This is limited only by the capacity of the delivery system used.
  • Serve the needs of people who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind (with accessibility sites) or low vision.
  • Send alerts in multiple languages.

Digital Signage

A secondary support function

One observation that we have seen over the years in digital signage is the "lack of urgency" or awareness around utilizing digital signage as a secondary support function of an already existing security system. This strategic enhancement has the potential to increase situational awareness and response accuracy if a worst case scenario happens.

This oversight represents a missed opportunity, particularly in safeguarding environments such as schools and corporate offices, where comprehensive safety and security solutions are already in place, often capable of supporting Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) standards. This adds a secondary layer of safety that can significantly enhance the overall security posture and emergency response capabilities of these establishments.

See it in action

Carousel and Singlewire Software work together to enhance safety and communication strategies. This video highlights how Carousel integrates with InformaCast to deliver critical alerts, including lockdowns, evacuations, severe weather warnings, and daily announcements. However, this is just one example of many. Carousel Digital Signage supports a variety of emergency notification systems and responds to incoming CAP (Common Alerting Protocol) messages. Whether using InformaCast or other CAP-enabled platforms, Carousel ensures seamless visual alerting during emergencies, keeping your campus informed and protected.

Share real-time information

Universities can use their digital signage software to develop a spiderweb of consistent, accurate real-time messaging that gets dispersed throughout the campus. This is where the value of “real-time” communication comes to fruition. Digital signage helps higher-ed institutions share real-time information about campus events, news, class cancellations and emergency alerts with immediacy. Instant communication keeps students and faculty informed about relevant developments and enhances their sense of campus awareness.

Public safety is paramount to community trust. Digital signage can integrate with emergency and mass notification systems to alert people of critical information in real-time, while simultaneously sending emergency messaging to all displays. This means that if digital signage was installed in all major departments across your campus, every screen would change to reflect that emergency information, ensuring the entire campus is informed with accurate communications. Modern technology equips universities with tools for rapid response and effective crisis management. During emergencies or disasters, digital signage can provide critical information on evacuation routes, shelter locations, and safety protocols. This enhances resilience and helps ensure the well-being of the campus community.
